Inside Drift: Meet Moe Lawson, Lead Recruiter

work at Drift

Welcome back to another edition of Inside Drift, where we introduce you to all of the people that make Drift such a great place to work.

So far you’ve met Shannon Donovan, Mary Mitchell, Catherine LaMacchia, Nadine Shaalan, Britnee Laughlin, Carolina Caprile, Michelle Ai, Frank Schepps, Tate Knapp, Zareena Javed, Stacy Chen, Lillian Frost, Josh Moody, Miles Kane, Lorraine Chon-Qui, Meghan Catucci, Josh Perk, and Fiona Heaney.

Today we’re introducing you to Maureen (Moe) Lawson, Lead Recruiter for our customer team. Moe joined Drift in March 2021 and has been instrumental in helping fill roles across our customer success department. When Moe isn’t prepping candidates for interviews, sharing and receiving feedback, or extending offers, you can find her preparing Halloween decorations for her incredible display (seriously, it’s impressive) or hanging out with her husband and their 10-year-old Great Dane, Patrick.

Ready to meet Moe? Let’s go ⚡️

Editor’s note: The following has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Kaitlyn Martins: Hi Moe. Let’s start with an easy one, can you tell me a bit about what you do at Drift?

Moe Lawson: My job is to welcome incredible talent and help see who will take us to the next level. I’m fortunate to partner with awesome hiring managers, interview teams, and executives to ensure candidates have a fair and enjoyable (maybe even unique) experience. Once they’re through the door, I join in watching candidates achieve, excel, and grow — and I applaud them from the sidelines 😊

What I love about my role at Drift is getting to connect with all kinds of interesting job seekers at different points in their careers. Maybe an article or social post caught their eye. Or they were referred by a friend or former colleague, and they’re curious to hear more. I just love meeting people who are motivated to make a change and a difference.

Kaitlyn: What does your day-to-day typically look like?

Moe: I don’t think there is a typical one. I’m sure everyone says that 😆

Usually, it’s a combination of calling candidates for an initial conversation, prepping them for formal interviews and presentations, sharing and receiving feedback, preparing and extending offers, and thanking Drifters for referrals. In short, speaking with lots and lots of people.

Our team tries to keep meetings to a minimum, which I appreciate. We typically have a weekly recruiting team meeting as well as a couple of weekly company-wide meetings, which are energetic and engaging. Of course, metrics and reporting are in there too because we’re nothing if not data-driven.

Kaitlyn: How many open roles do we have across the organization right now?

Moe: 64 open roles at the moment.

Kaitlyn: You see A LOT of resumes and talk to a lot of prospective Drifters in your role — what makes a candidate really stand out in the interview process?

Moe: Going beyond the piece of paper. I love — in fact, every hiring manager, interviewer, Drifter loves — to hear the candidate’s enthusiasm for us. Are you excited about our product, our people, our Leadership Principles? Have you read our content, completed a training course, or something else? If so, say so — let it show! It means the world to us.

Kaitlyn: Why is now an exciting time to join Drift?

Moe: Over the last several months, we rebuilt the foundation of the customer team in order to hit the ground running in 2022. We’ve almost doubled in size (160 strong out of over 500 Drifters total) while recruiting the best talent in the industry on our journey to IPO. We’re all excited to see how that unfolds.

Kaitlyn: What is a fun fact that people might not know about you?

Moe:  Well, anyone who’s known me for two seconds knows I’m a HUGE Halloween fan. Obsessed, really! Every year, my husband and I decorate our front yard big-time.

Something people might not know about me is that I come from a big family. I have four awesome older siblings — I’m a proud aunt to five nieces and nephews and a great-aunt to six great-nieces and great-nephews. And, in August 2021, my husband and I welcomed a granddaughter 👶

We’re also happy parents to our nearly 10-year-old Great Dane, Patrick, who we talk about nonstop and spoil with lots of treats.

Kaitlyn: When you aren’t working, what can we find you doing?

Moe: I love music, and I thrive while listening to and watching live DJs from all over the world on Twitch. I also love cooking all kinds of dishes and spend a good part of the weekend doing that. Another thing I enjoy is reading every night before I go to sleep.

When I do exercise (which needs to be way more often), it’s walking, kickboxing, HIIT, weights, and yoga. And all summer, you can find me on my back deck building Halloween props while listening to music 🎃

Kaitlyn: Finally, what advice do you have for prospective Drift candidates?

Moe: In addition to showing enthusiasm for us and our product, researching us, keeping up with our news, etc., I really enjoy “hearing” a candidate’s true voice. It’s always great to get a sense of a person’s positive energy and genuine excitement. My reaction is always, “I can’t wait to speak with this person!”

It also means so much to me when someone does their homework. I’m happy to say we put forth a ton of awesome content, so there’s a lot for you to glean from. Additionally, we’re always impressed when someone has completed one of our certifications, like the Conversational Marketing Certification, or references a Leadership Principle that speaks to them.

As we say, be a “curious learning machine.” Ask a lot of questions as you go through the interview process. After all, knowledge is power 💡
