We Ditched the Traditional Conference Q&A: Here’s What We’re Doing Instead

We’re all familiar with the traditional marketing conference format:

First, you battle to get into the session you’re most excited about.

Next, you listen to the speaker present for 45 minutes.

Then, if you’re lucky, there’s a five-minute window for some Q&A with the speaker. (But you never to get to ask your question because there’s always that one person up front who keeps hogging the mic.)

Let’s face it: At most conferences, there’s no real connection between the attendees and the speakers.

But here’s the deal. At HYPERGROWTH, we’re doing things differently. It’s one day, one stage, one agenda. And now we’re adding a new element into the mix:

Video messaging with your favorite speakers.

Thanks to our friends at Helpful, all HYPERGROWTH attendees will be able to make a direct connection with our incredible lineup of speakers.

The Q&A Session for the Modern Conference

Instead of the typical, everyone-raises-their-hands-and-waits approach, we’re going to be using Helpful to run our Q&A at HYPERGROWTH.

Helpful is an app we use here internally at Drift for sending video messages. It’s a way for us to send quick video updates via our phones, so we can stay connected even when we’re on the go.

By using Helpful for our Q&A at HYPERGROWTH, all attendees will have the opportunity to send video questions to speakers. (No more raising hands and having one person hog the mic the whole time.)

If you’re going to HYPERGROWTH and have a question for a speaker, here’s what to do (instructions courtesy of our pals at Helpful):

  1. Download Helpful on iOS or Android.
  2. Create a Helpful account with the email that you used to register for HYPERGROWTH.
  3. Once you’ve created an account, you’ll see the HYPERGROWTH speakers listed in your contacts.
  4. Tap on the speaker and hold down the button to record a quick video.
  5. That’s it! If you have questions or need support, email us at hypergrowth@helpful.com, or send us a video to Helpful Support inside the app.

So, What Questions Are You Going to Ask?

Remember, HYPERGROWTH speakers won’t just be focused on business growth. They’ll be talking about personal and professional growth as well. So be sure to tailor your questions accordingly.

For example, maybe you’ll want to know what November Project co-founder Brogan Graham’s morning routine looks like.

Actually, scratch that, we already asked him. (And spoiler alert, it involves surfing.)

I wake up at the @$$ crack, I drink coffee, I play on social media, I wear clothing with paint on the chest as I head out into the world to November Project, trail runs, surf here in San Diego, or whatever else we can build using our shared community.

Or maybe you’ll want to ask ClassPass CMO Joanna Lord what book she recommends to people most frequently.

Wait, actually, we have the answer to that, too: Designing Brand Identity by Alina Wheeler.

But you get the idea. Hopefully these examples will help you get the wheels turning so you can come up with a few questions of your own.

We are so pumped here at Drift and can’t wait to see you all at HYPERGROWTH on September 25th.

But guess what? You don’t have to wait until then to start asking your questions.

Download the Helpful app on iOS or Android and you can start submitting questions to your favorite HYPERGROWTH speakers right now.
